How to Identify Genuine Amber

When you purchase Amber Jewellery

The growth in e commerce in the past few years has been huge. Whilst this is convenient for us, it also increases the ability and ease of people selling fake products

Here are some tips that will keep you from buying fake merchandise.

When purchasing online, you should take some steps to verify the credibility of the seller. A safe method of payment should be provided such as PayPal or a payment service provider that guarantees a refund if there is a problem.

Here are the key points to be consider when purchasing Baltic Amber products online:

1) The retailer guarantees that their Amber is 100% genuine Baltic Amber. Look for a guarantee on their website.

2) Ensure their Baltic Amber Children's necklaces have undergone tests for safety against EU Standards.

3) Credible retailers will offer a 14 or 21 day money back guarantee.

4) If the price is really low, that should be a red flag. Amber is becoming more rare so online sellers may offer an “inexpensive” version such as Copal. While some of these fakes may look good, they have no effect on any ailments, as they do not contain the same properties.

How to Identify Genuine Amber

There are many ways of testing amber, but here are 2 of the simplest that can be done at home.

1) Mix 23gms of standard table salt with 200ml of luke warm water. Stir until completely dissolved. Amber should float in such a mixture and plastics will sink.

2) Drop or rub some acetone on the amber (you can use nail polish remover with acetone), it will have no affect on amber but plastics will become sticky and therefore you could leave a fingerprint
